Learn How To Make Your Own Wire Crochet Jewelry

wire3

On Thursday, April 25th, you can learn to make your own single-line wire crochet pieces. We love the unique, homespun look of wire crochet. You can create a heavy, ornate design, or something that feels light as air. It’s a medium that offers a lot of opportunity for your own style to come through, and at this workshop, you’ll learn the basics.

The workshop runs from 7pm-9pm at 111 Jarvis St.

The cost of the workshop is $15, and you’ll need to hit up a sewing or craft store and buy 16 or 18 gauge wire, a button, and some beads. You can also bring $13 and pick up the materials at the class, but let the instructor know when you sign up!

We’re huge DIY fans at SDTC (we’re independent—sing it, ladies!), so this sounds super fun!

On March 27 and April 8, Uniiverse is offering DIY workshops to teach you how to make fishtail bracelets. We’ve all seen the fishtail look in hair, so why not translate that to your jewellery? These bracelets are cute, plus they’re fun and easy to make!

For just $25, you get a two-hour bracelet making workshop that lets you choose your own colours (all materials are included) and make two to three bracelets for you, your friends, or your family. This Wednesday’s event is almost full, so sign up soon!

The DIY workshop – Fishtail bracelets takes place Wednesday, March 27 and Monday, April 8 from 6pm to 8pm at 111 Jarvis St.

Not Your Mother’s Pearl Necklace

Oddly enough, I’ve been into pearls as of late. Which is strange, considering in my mind they’re the bastion of all things antiquated and stodgy. I know there’s the whole Chanel standby of layering so many pearls on top of each other, but for me, most pearl necklaces seem more like a form of sartorial strangulation than anything else. However, there are a couple exceptions. Notable exceptions, in fact.

One of my favourite pieces I’ve found this summer is from the Ossington Ave. mainstay, I Miss You Vintage. [It’s a short sleeved, turtle-necked crop top comprised entirely of pearls. Armor heavy, and certainly off-kilter, it’s a piece best saved for those moments when you feel like indulging your inner eccentric heiress (read: Daphne Guinness). The lesson here? Look for pieces that use pearls in a non-traditional way. Whether you can find boleros covered in the stuff, or your own crazy crop top, it’s a statement piece that’ll look primly punk.

The second item that’s been in constant rotation in my wardrobe is another find from I Miss You Vintage (except it’s their new Victorian concept shop). A little more cute than kooky, it’s an incredibly on trend 1940’s pearl collar necklace. You can pair something like this with an adorable skirt/top combination for an easy touch of elegance, or with a long sleeved black silk shirt and leather trouser for a more monochromatic vibe.

If you find yourself unable to commit to wearing pearls on your body, why not wear them on your head? Wear a necklace like a garland, or glue larger pearls to bobby pins and barrettes to add some drama to your ‘do.

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Nilou has found her look. It’s called FUN WITH FEATHERS. We ♥ it.

While Kate, Madelyn and Lin have shopped for part of their prom outfits, Nilou has assembled hers head to toe. And it’s gorgeous.

Ready…set….prom!

Shopping for prom may not be as easy as shopping for your 8-year-old sister. In fact, it’s kind of like trying to get your dad a gift; if you’re like me, that’s a pretty grand task!

There are so many dresses at Yorkdale but once you’ve found “the one”, then the fun begins, ACCESSORIES!! If I can impart some wisdom: Don’t go too overboard. There are many pretty little things, but not everything will necessarily “go” with your dress.

I’d like to call my look FUN WITH FEATHERS. I’ve paired this Bebe dress with pastel accessories, to add colour but still keep things sophisticated.

1. Isis Sequin Feather Dress in tan from Bebe $198

2. Mackall Peep Toe Pump in light pink from Aldo $100

3. Metal Knot Ring from BCBG $18.00

4. Spike Bangle from BCBG $35.00

5. 12 Pack Earrings from H&M $6.95

6. Landaverde Clutch from
ALDO $45.00

7. Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray from Sephora $29.00

8. Moonshadow Baked Eyeshadow Collection from Sephora $30.00

9. Sephora Collection False Eyelashes from Sephora $8.00

10. Bumble and Bumble Spray De Mode from Sephora $15.00

I ’m ready for you prom!

XO Nilou

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Lin is styling in reverse by starting with orange lips and vibrant pumps. Don’t worry, she knows what she’s doing.

It appears as though each Yorkdale Prom Ambassador has a totally different approach to finding their perfect prom look; as they should! Madelyn found her dress, Kate went straight to Tiffany and Lin ran to Aldo to find the perfect pair of pumps that will make her prom outfit seriously stand out. Lin knows what she wants and has an amazing eye for style but might need your help in the shoe department…er…she’s narrowed her picks down to seven. Which pair of colourful heels do you like best? Hey, at least she’s sorted the lipstick: Morange Orange from M.A.C. Mwahhh! We *love*.

Shopping is a fashionista’s favourite form of exercise and Yorkdale is definitely one of the best places to do that. Besides, what better way to get into prom-ready shape than at a mall?

Warning:  You always want to go with an open mind and a shopping list.  It’s really easy to lose focus and start blowing money on things you don’t actually need.  Making a plan beforehand of shops you want to hit up will definitely help minimize the temptation.  My plan was all about finding fun shoes and bright lipstick to pop against my dress and hair. (Lin has the most exotic blue hair extensions!)

Shoes, jewelry, a super cute clutch, and makeup were on my shopping list. Although I haven’t yet decided on a dress, I know the style and colour I want; I went on quest for the accessories that will complement it.

Brainstorming all the different combinations of accessories I could use with a royal blue dress I have decided that I do not want classic black heels. I’m going to have fun with my prom look and so I’m on the hunt for bright pumps that will get noticed on the dance floor.

All these heels are a mix of beautiful colours that are so fun and would be the perfect pop of life to my prom look.  Not to mention I could see myself rocking these shoes with a lot more outfits.

These shoes call for some funky bangles, an interesting choice in lip colour, and an eccentric clutch. Keeping the many colours to a minimum with accessories that match makes the look seem tied together yet unexpected.

I really got excited about the funky colours when it came to thinking about my make up, I knew that a bright orange lip and a subtle yet classic eye will look amazing. I chose an orange lip colour because it’s a complimentary colour to my royal blue dress.

Yorkdale has such a variety of stores that offer tons of choices and products that will help me achieve my envisioned prom look; I’m definitely looking forward to shopping trip number two!

1. BLAYNE (Aldo shoes)- $150.00 2. STROMBECK (Aldo shoes)- $120.00 3. ANTONINI (Aldo shoes)- $74.98 4. MAZAR (Aldo shoes)- $110.00 5. PRAK (Aldo shoes)- $ 90.00 6. SHURKUS (Aldo shoes)- $ 90.00 7. KIARA PATENT COLORBLOCK SANDAL (Bebe shoes)- $129.00

1. MAC COSMETICS- CROSS CULTURAL EYE SHADOW $18.00 2. CRYSTAL AVALANCHE EYE SHADOW $18.00 3. MORANGE LIPSTICK $17.50 4. SOLAR RICHE BRONZER $28.00

1. BANGLES- SEED-BEAD BRACELET $58.00 2. BOBZIEN $18.00
