Prom Reads: Books to get you excited for prom

Remember how fictional high school South Glen South of 1999′s seminal classic Never Been Kissed had a prom that was themed “Famous Couples Throughout History,” and most of the couples were from literature, like Drew’s CLASSIC Rosaline from As You Like It? Prom is about fantasy on a lot of levels, and so is fiction. So while you’re dreaming up the perfect shoes for your feet and dress for your bod, we found you the perfect book for your nose. … Because books are where your nose goes. ANYWAY, check out the fiction that suits your fashion by giving a glance to one of these hot new titles.

If this is your dress: Modcloth With Only A Wink dress in navy, sizes xs-4x, $139.99

And these are your shoes: Modcloth I’m Pumped Heel, sizes 5.5-10, $34.99

Then this is your prom read: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
One of our favourite books of all time, this cult favourite novel is about to be made into a film. In the book, Charlie writes letters to an anonymous stranger about his high school experiences on the social fringe, and meeting the girls and hearing the songs that change everything.

If this is your dress: Urban Outfitters Reverse Faux-Leather bustier dress, sizes M-L, $89

And these are your shoes: Forever 21 Knotted Platform Sandals, sizes 6-10, $29.80.

Then this is your prom read: The Unbecoming of Mara Dwyer
After Mara Dwyer wakes up in the hospital with no memory of how she got there, she must embark on a mission to uncover the truth about the accident that put her in a coma and killed her friends. But Mara’s hunt for the truth coincides with the arrival in her life of a handsome and distracting boy. This darkly funny book manages to tackle love and loss with equal parts irreverence and sincerity.

If this is your dress: Talula Fleetwood Dress,$75.

And these are your shoes: Urban Outfitters Mia Braided Quarter Strap Heel, sizes 7-10, $79

Then this is your prom read: Shrinking Violet
This book is the inspiration for the Disney Channel original film Radio Rebel, and tells the story of a high school senior who’s painfully shy in the halls—but a sassy success when she scores her own radio show. But when the station runs a contest, and the prize is taking her to prom, her worlds threaten to collide.

If this is your dress: Sydney’s Closet Go for the Gold Dress, sizes 14-24, $258.

And these are your shoes: Aldo Durling High Heel, sizes 5-11, $100

Then this is your prom read: Fat Hoochie Prom Queen
It’s a fight to the death (er.. crown) between the ‘fat, foxy and fabulous’ Madge Diaz and student-body president Bridget Benson, as the two girls try to settle their four-year long rivalry by beating the other to be Winter Park High School’s prom queen. The two girls get sassy and sneaky as they try to outshine each other and win the title.

If this is your dress: BCBG Kyra Bustier Evening Gown, sizes XXS-L, $248.

And these are your shoes: Nine West Danee, sizes 5-11, $120.

Then this is your prom read: When You Were Mine
Think Romeo and Juliet is the most romantic story of our time? Rosaline disagrees when her crazy former bff Juliet shows up and throws her new relationship with dream-guy Rob into turmoil. Rosaline, Romeo’s original intended even in Shakespeare’s play, tells her side of the story in a modern reworking of the romantic classic.

We hope all of you have a wonderful Prom. And remember, the best advice came from you: Enjoy and have fun!

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Nilou has found her look. It’s called FUN WITH FEATHERS. We ♥ it.

While Kate, Madelyn and Lin have shopped for part of their prom outfits, Nilou has assembled hers head to toe. And it’s gorgeous.

Ready…set….prom!

Shopping for prom may not be as easy as shopping for your 8-year-old sister. In fact, it’s kind of like trying to get your dad a gift; if you’re like me, that’s a pretty grand task!

There are so many dresses at Yorkdale but once you’ve found “the one”, then the fun begins, ACCESSORIES!! If I can impart some wisdom: Don’t go too overboard. There are many pretty little things, but not everything will necessarily “go” with your dress.

I’d like to call my look FUN WITH FEATHERS. I’ve paired this Bebe dress with pastel accessories, to add colour but still keep things sophisticated.

1. Isis Sequin Feather Dress in tan from Bebe $198

2. Mackall Peep Toe Pump in light pink from Aldo $100

3. Metal Knot Ring from BCBG $18.00

4. Spike Bangle from BCBG $35.00

10. Bumble and Bumble Spray De Mode from Sephora $15.00

I ’m ready for you prom!

XO Nilou

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Lin is styling in reverse by starting with orange lips and vibrant pumps. Don’t worry, she knows what she’s doing.

It appears as though each Yorkdale Prom Ambassador has a totally different approach to finding their perfect prom look; as they should! Madelyn found her dress, Kate went straight to Tiffany and Lin ran to Aldo to find the perfect pair of pumps that will make her prom outfit seriously stand out. Lin knows what she wants and has an amazing eye for style but might need your help in the shoe department…er…she’s narrowed her picks down to seven. Which pair of colourful heels do you like best? Hey, at least she’s sorted the lipstick: Morange Orange from M.A.C. Mwahhh! We *love*.

Shopping is a fashionista’s favourite form of exercise and Yorkdale is definitely one of the best places to do that. Besides, what better way to get into prom-ready shape than at a mall?

Warning:  You always want to go with an open mind and a shopping list.  It’s really easy to lose focus and start blowing money on things you don’t actually need.  Making a plan beforehand of shops you want to hit up will definitely help minimize the temptation.  My plan was all about finding fun shoes and bright lipstick to pop against my dress and hair. (Lin has the most exotic blue hair extensions!)

Shoes, jewelry, a super cute clutch, and makeup were on my shopping list. Although I haven’t yet decided on a dress, I know the style and colour I want; I went on quest for the accessories that will complement it.

Brainstorming all the different combinations of accessories I could use with a royal blue dress I have decided that I do not want classic black heels. I’m going to have fun with my prom look and so I’m on the hunt for bright pumps that will get noticed on the dance floor.

All these heels are a mix of beautiful colours that are so fun and would be the perfect pop of life to my prom look.  Not to mention I could see myself rocking these shoes with a lot more outfits.

These shoes call for some funky bangles, an interesting choice in lip colour, and an eccentric clutch. Keeping the many colours to a minimum with accessories that match makes the look seem tied together yet unexpected.

I really got excited about the funky colours when it came to thinking about my make up, I knew that a bright orange lip and a subtle yet classic eye will look amazing. I chose an orange lip colour because it’s a complimentary colour to my royal blue dress.

Yorkdale has such a variety of stores that offer tons of choices and products that will help me achieve my envisioned prom look; I’m definitely looking forward to shopping trip number two!

1. BLAYNE (Aldo shoes)- $150.00 2. STROMBECK (Aldo shoes)- $120.00 3. ANTONINI (Aldo shoes)- $74.98 4. MAZAR (Aldo shoes)- $110.00 5. PRAK (Aldo shoes)- $ 90.00 6. SHURKUS (Aldo shoes)- $ 90.00 7. KIARA PATENT COLORBLOCK SANDAL (Bebe shoes)- $129.00

1. MAC COSMETICS- CROSS CULTURAL EYE SHADOW $18.00 2. CRYSTAL AVALANCHE EYE SHADOW $18.00 3. MORANGE LIPSTICK $17.50 4. SOLAR RICHE BRONZER $28.00

1. BANGLES- SEED-BEAD BRACELET $58.00 2. BOBZIEN $18.00

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Nilou compares clutches and shows us how to pack a purse for prom.

Clutches are the best because you can play with the colours and not worry too much about matching. What I mean is: Don’t pair a yellow dress with a yellow clutch! Do get funky and show off your personality with something fun!

Here are six clutches at Yorkdale that caught my eye, how could they not?

Printed Messenger Bag from Zara
$79.90

Odessa Caged Clutch in bright blue from BCBG
$118.00

Satin Rhinestone Trim Clutch in fuschia from Le Chateau
$49.95

H&M neon yellow clutch with gold chain H&M
$19.95.

Hains Clutch in royal purple from Aldo
$42.00

Exotic Rainbow Tablet Envelope Clutch in electric green from BCBG
$98.00

What to put in that cute clutch? Nilou’s got tips for the perfect prom purse.

Imagine being at prom and forgetting your lip balm. You’ll be stuck with chapped lips all night while you’re trying to swoon your crush aka date (not cute). There are a couple of MUST haves for prom that you should have packed all nice and ready in your clutch.

1. Lip balm! If you’re like me, you already have this ready, but sometimes we forget, so let’s avoid the mental breakdowns and pack 1 or 2. Don’t forget your lipstick either! This way you can touch up the color on your lips AND have nice smooth looking lips. Dry lips are never fun.

2. Blotting pads or mattifying powder: If you’ve followed my posts, I recommended a finishing spray by Urban Decay to set your makeup. To ensure full oil control, pack some of this magic!

Sephora Matte Blotting Papers: $8.00 for 100 sheets

Urban Decay De-Slick Mattifying Powder: $32.00, this translucent is a must have for setting make up and touch ups. Just a light amount will give you a fresh face!

3. Your phone: Please don’t put your phone in your bra. Please.  Keep your phone in your clutch and don’t be a Tina Texter. It’s prom! You can take it out for some photos, but surely your mom has snapped a million at the pre-prom event.

4. Advil: You never know when a headache will hit you. It may seem weird, but some of us are prone to daily headaches and migraines. A little travel pack would be cool to have since you can’t run to a drugstore at prom. You could even save a friend from having a crappy night of head throbbing. Hey, it could even be your crush!

5. Gum: You already know! This is a staple.

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Lin advises statement necklaces and metal mixing for a formal look that really stands out

Yorkdale Prom Ambassador Lin doesn’t need much to stand out in a crowd. I mean, she already has blue hair. That said, there are always ways to add drama and an edgy feel to a formal look. Like Lin, we are totally of the belief that you can take any prom look and really make it your own. All you need is imagination. Here, Lin breaks down some easy ways to break the dress code and really own it.

Just because prom is formal doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and inject some of your personality into your look.  While I agree that straying too far from the prom dress-code could be disastrous, there are definitely ways to work your way around it.  There should be no doubt that you look glam and are dressed formally in the beautiful ‘it’ dress you choose, but have some fun with the accessories!

Add some pop with colour!

Having a pop of colour with your shoes or clutch (if you’re really daring, maybe even your lipstick colour choice!) can definitely bring more interest to anyone’s prom look.

Dare to wear a statement necklace.

Statement necklaces can also bring a little more flare to anyone’s prom look.  Just watch out for your dress neckline, you don’t want to wear a nice eye-catching necklace if it takes away from the neckline cut of your dress! (Statement necklaces especially won’t work with off the shoulder dresses, the symmetry is going to look all wrong and lopsided!)

Fashion is like art, express yourself!

Ultimately it comes down to your personality, as it should when it comes to getting dressed for any occasion.  Dress expressively and don’t be afraid to let your personality show through your clothing choices.  If you’re a sweet and elegant girl try some simple jewelry that isn’t overly chunky or glitzed out.  For our more rock and roll chicks, anything that is subtly studded is always a good option.  Don’t get too crazy with the studs though, you have to remember as much as you might want to kick off your heels and mosh around you’re still at a formal event, just looking a little more edgy then the next chick.
