DARE NIGHT: Lockdown. Wanna sleepover at the Gladstone tonight and eat Pus Pizza?

There is something really creepy happening at The Gladstone Hotel tonight.  If you dare, you can trek down to Queen and Gladstone with your sleeping bag for a slumber party that will include a “Blood Ball” (???), something described as “Old Women Shooting Guns” (????!!!) and an activity(?) called “Poop Your Pants”. These happenings will be intertwined with ghost stories and double dog scary dares that will involve a “bleeding hat”.

If you get hungry you can eat the “Pus Pizza” on offering, but be warned, this PIZZA MAY EAT YOU!! (Yep, we have no idea.) What’s even weirder? Something called “The Astral Project” will teach you how to have an out-of-body experience so that you can transport yourself into Mayor Rob Ford’s shower. Great! We’ve always wanted to know what lathering soap feels like in Rob Ford’s body!

Who the heck is throwing this all night bash?  Part of the SummerWorks Live Art series, Dare Night Lock Down is a two day event, organized and presented by experiential art collective, Mammalian Diving Reflex, and teen performance artists, The Torontonians. It’s a free happening! So if getting scared shitless and eating cheese-pus pizza sounds like an AWESOME time, rally your friends and be prepared to freak out all night!!

In the morning, the sleepover gang will wander to Dufferin Grove Park for a “Mourning Wiener Feast” cookout breakfast. This will be followed by a basketball challenge.

#BornToStyle at Aveda Institute had young aspiring hairdressers compete for a $10,000 scholarship

Have you ever considered being a hair stylist? I heard once that, in terms of career choice, hairdressers were measurably happier than anyone. I believe it; certainly last night’s #BornToStyle event at the Aveda Institute on King St. East was an incredibly joyous occasion.

Five aspiring hair stylists competed in the #BornToStyle finale by creating an overall look for their selected model (most were their BFFs) including hair, makeup and outfit. They had a set time to create their look and then it was a strict "BRUSHES DOWN!" before their models hit the catwalk. I was honoured to be a judge alongside iwantigot’s Anita Clarke and Aveda founder Ray Civello. Our criteria for judging included the overall transformation of model, whether the look suited the model, technical intricacies and details (i.e how impressive was the up-do?) and most importantly, creative ingenuity! Stakes were high as the winning girl would receive a $10,000 scholarship to attend the Aveda Institute. WOW! #Lifechanging.

Friends and parents came out to cheer the contestants on and Toronto media were also in attendance, eager to support such a wonderful event. Miss Teen Ontario-World, Sacha Stewart, was spotted running around the studio space, snapping pics with models. She is very sweet. And small.

While judges deliberated, guests got Aveda hand massages (best party favour ever) and were passed trays of Aveda lipsticks and gloss for makeup touch ups (second best party favour ever!).

So who won? DRUMROLLLLLLLLLLL! In an uprecedented move, Ray Civello surprised everyone (including fellow judges) and awarded both Meladee Gammelsetter and Jessie lacina a $10,000 scholarship. Well played, Ray. Very well played.

It was an inspiring, fun, heartwarming event and I was delighted to have been included.

Follow Aveda on Twitter @Aveda416…maybe you will enter next year?

P.S If you want a really good haircut that isn’t expensive, book an appointment with a hairdresser in training! See deets on the Aveda Institute site.

TIFF Next Wave hosts Battle of the Scores, where local bands compete for best original score set to a silent film

A committee of aspiring filmmakers, hailing from a variety of high schools in the GTA, helped put on a totally awesome weekend of events inspired by their love of film.

On Friday night, Shedoesthecity attended Battle of the Scores wherein six bands/musicians took the stage to show off a musical score they wrote that accompanied short silent films, projected on the main screen. The range of music included everything from a mask-clad dude who crafted beats on his laptop to two chicks decked in all grunge slamming a drum kit and riffing hard on a low-slung bass guitar. Badass. Each act was extraordinarily talented in their own right and were judged by a panel of music and film industry movers and shakers. Although we were impressed by all who braved the stage, the boys in What Fools received the most votes; as a prize, their music will be used in an upcoming Canadian flick. How cool is that? Plus, we think their pop-rock sound and cute looks could easily rival One Direction. Seriously. Following Battle of the Scores, we were all granted access to a secret VIP party that included free poutine delivered by Smokes Poutine and a live show from local bad boy rappers, 2 Andrews.

TIFF Next Wave – Battle of the Scores also programmed riveting docs and high school angst films all weekend long AND hosted a set design competition for students interested in art department careers. After all, the film industry is much more than actors and directors!

We think this is an awesome new initiative for TIFF. If you are passionate about film, you should connect with them about potentially joining the TIFF Next Wave – Battle of the Scores committee next year or follow @TIFF_NET and keep up to date with programs offered for Toronto youth.

P.S Creative points go to the two guys who call their band Lesbian Bondage Fiasco. Hee hee.
